Entrepreneurs Need Essentialism To Thrive & Grow Their Business

On last night’s Merch Money show we had the pleasure of sitting down with Amanda Balcazar to discuss how essentialism keeps you sane as an entrepreneur.  Amanda and her husband John have been entrepreneurs in eCommerce for the past 14 years and counting!

Amanda is also the co-host of the Hot Mess to Success podcast for entrepreneurs.  She and her podcast partner Laura Love are passionate entrepreneurs who have survived the “rollercoaster” of emotions associate with owning their own businesses.  They don’t claim to be experts but bring a variety of entrepreneurs on their show to share their hot messes to hot successes!

Amanda is an entrepreneur dedicated to continuous improvement and self-growth. To that end, she is constantly reading books on business, entrepreneurship and personal development.  One of her latest reads is Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown which can be picked up here on Amazon.

What is essentialism?  Greg McKeown defines it with the following quote “Essentialism: only once you give yourself permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, can you make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter.”

Amanda, Helen and I discussed our opinions on this topic and decided that to us, essentialism is about focus and creating a minimalist mindset in business by getting rid of anything that doesn’t, in the famous words of Marie Kondo, "spark joy".  Amanda and Helen seem to have mastered this concept however I, on the other hand, am still working on this one!

Of course, our discussion didn’t stop there, it led us to discuss the challenges of being an entrepreneur, the people we look up to as role models, and also led Amanda to cite several other books that have had a lasting impression on her and helped her become a better entrepreneur and business owner.

So, if you’re an entrepreneur looking for some books to add to your Kindle library, Amanda mentioned the following:
